The GMA T.50 needs no introduction. If you’re not yet aware of Gordon Murray’s three-seat V12 supercar then you clearly haven’t been paying attention. At the 82nd Members’ Me...
Only 100 GMA T.50s will be built, and around 60 of them have been delivered to their customers so far. It has the same distinctive three-seat arrangement as Gordon Murray’s McLaren F1 of the 1990s, but in many other ways the game has moved on considerably. For one thing, the fan that’s very apparent at the back of the car is there to generate downforce just as it did with Murray’s Brabham Formula 1 fancar back in 1978.
For spectators, though, it’s the noise that makes the greatest impression. The Cosworth-developed 3.9-litre V12 engine revs to a stratospheric 12,100rpm. And that screaming soundtrack was at its most apparent later in the demonstration when Dario Franchitti took to the circuit in the track-only T.50s.
Lighter and more powerful than the road-going variant, it also produces more downforce. Driver involvement is prioritised over lap times (for instance, the potential 1,900kg of downforce was tweaked down to 1,500kg), but there’s no doubting that it’s very quick indeed. You only need to witness the way it devoured Goodwood’s straights to see that. One other change from T.50 to T.50s is the move to paddleshift from a conventional manual gearbox.
Sandwiched between the T.50 variants in the demonstration was the two-seater T.33. This is GMA’s second supercar, and one that combines a classic 1960s-inspired aesthetic with that same V12 engine. In this form, it has a lowered redline and revised exhaust, but it still sounds more than a bit special. Demonstration duties were performed by the test mule named ‘James’.
Tickets for the 83rd Members’ Meeting will be available for a limited time immediately after this year’s event for Members and Fellows of the GRRC. Admission and Grandstand tickets will go on sale on Monday 14th April for Members, and Wednesday 16th April for Fellows.
