Total attendances across Britain’s 59 racecourses reached 6,129,433 in 2015 which was 309,463 more than 2014 and just 21,810 short of the 2011 record (6,151,243).

Goodwood’s season attendance of 221,620 played an important role in this increase across Britain’s 59 racecourses.

2015 is the third year in a row that attendances have risen, highlighting the growing popularity of racing as a sport as well as a social event. At Goodwood Racecourse, we pride ourselves on offering a broad range of entertainment as well as free entry for Under 18s, helping us to provide an excellent day out for all ages as well as fantastic value.

Alex Eade, Goodwood’s General Manager said: “We are delighted that we have been able to contribute to this bumper year for racecourse attendances. We take great pride in promoting our fantastic sport and we hope that everybody who attended in 2015 will want to come back this year.

“The work we have done alongside the RCA, Great British Racing, the BHA and horsemen to provide an attractive product bodes very well for the future. With better insight and intelligent use of data to drive our marketing, hopefully we can help racecourse attendances reach record levels in 2016.”

Stephen Atkin, Chief Executive of the RCA, said: “It is very pleasing to see this level of growth in attendances over the course of 2015. The rise in the total and average attendances in 2015 is reward for the hard work that racecourses like Goodwood put in on a daily basis. It shows the importance of Goodwood to its community and everybody on the team deserves enormous credit for helping us to hit the six million mark.

“The work that has been done around the Insight=Growth project means that every racecourse knows more about its customers than ever before and armed with these findings we hope that Goodwood can grow its attendances in 2016.”

Rod Street, Chief Executive of Great British Racing, said: “It is very pleasing to see this level of growth in attendances over the course of 2015. We also know that there are still 34 million people in Britain who are aware of racing but have not yet considered it and this is an exciting opportunity for racecourses. We look forward to working with them over the course of the year to hopefully grow attendances once again.”
