Volkswagen teases Puma-rivalling Taigo

Volkswagen is teasing an addition to its already bulbous SUV and crossover offering. Here is your first impression of the Taigo. No, not a tropical house DJ, it’s what VW is calling its “new sporty SUV coupe”.

It’s just a concept for now, albeit one of those concepts that’s closer to a production model in drag. The production car, when it arrives towards the end of the year, will be based on the Nivus, a successful model from Volkswagen’s Brazillian market line-up.

In terms of looks, we’re not so convinced on the ‘coupe’ thing, but from what we have, it looks to be a very traditionally handsome Volkswagen. It sort of puts us in mind of the old Tiguan Concept from 2007, brought up to date with the now ubiquitous wrap-around lighting. The lightbar at the back is very modern and stylish, though we expect the recessed exhausts in the bumper won’t make it to production.

Ford crossovers went cool with the Puma, so we’d hazard to guess this is a response to that. If you’re somewhat concerned about the Brazillian origins, we don’t blame you. The regrettable Fox, which replaced the excellent Lupo in 2005, had similar origins. We will, for now, reserve judgement. On the face of it, it’s a nice-looking little family CUV. What do you think of the Taigo so far?
