Vision148 is a carbon-fibre-bodied Ford RS500

Yes, original RS500s have already achieved cult-car status thanks to their storming looks, legendary Cosworth YB engines and significant motorsport achievements, so it should be no surprise that it’s now being restomodded. 

Called the Vision148, the car – only one is being built – gets its name from its #148 donor chassis (one of just 500 made) and will be built by a conglomerate of UK automotive firms, including big hitters such as Cosworth.  

The idea is to showcase the best bleeding edge UK design by building a carbon-fibre-bodied RS500 with a target weight of less than 1,000kg. To make it, ASM Auto Recycling will strip the donor car, 3D scanning components as it goes to create a digital double that can be used as a template to create the Vision148’s body.

Nicknamed the Carbon Piranha, the car’s new panels will be designed by UK-based automotive design house Yasid Design. Power is expected to come from a reworked version of the original motor.

And the price? For once, it’s not astronomical; you can’t buy the car. Instead, you need to win it. The group is saying the car will “be won by a fan of the project” but gives no more details than that. 

Project founder Ian Howe said: “Vision148 is all about collaboration with automotive and motorsport specialists in additive manufacturing and digital design and aligning with originator brands such as Cosworth who will bring this car to life. This is amplified by a unique membership club to engage fans of the project who have the chance of owning the finished car.”
