Which is the series of cars that immortalised Ferrari? Of all, the argument is easiest to make for the 250 family. To celebrate this iconic model, we thought we’d chart its varied history from its creation, to its road and racing success and lasting legacy.
As the years march on, the legend of the 250s only solidifies as values balloon. It’s a family of cars dear to Goodwood as many variants came to our Motor Circuit in period to prove themselves in the heat of battle. Sir Stirling Moss and John Surtees are just two of motor racing’s greats associated with the 250 on-track, be it the beautiful GT SWB model or the venerable GTO.
It’s a large family of cars built around one incredible engine, the 3.0-litre Colombo V12, which lends the swept volume of one of its cylinders to the name of the cars that use it. Even today, over 60 years on, the Colombo is heralded as one of the all-time great engines, while the cars it powers are celebrated as some of the most beautiful and certainly valuable, ever made.
