Electric is all the rage these days. Just browse through the motorcycling media, or take a trip down the trails and you’ll find a plethora of powered two-wheelers feeding off the main grid. And Triumph has decided it wants a piece of the action – targeting an entirely new audience. That’s right, the British manufacturer has become the latest motorcycle marque to build an electric bicycle, the Trekker GT.
But unlike Ducati’s full-suspension Mig-RR, the Triumph e-bicycle is a rather more sophisticated affair. The sleek Trekker GT is an electric hardtail, benefitting from Triumph’s world-renowned vehicle styling team and featuring commuter-orientated accessories. In prototype photographs released today, the wide-barred model is finished in a satin matte grey and black, with Triumph’s logo placed subtly on the down tube.
Boasting the latest in Shimano battery and drivetrain technology, the Trekker GT promises a range of 150km from its Steps E6100 motor, which puts out 250w (that’s the equivalent of 0.3bhp) and 60Nm (44lb ft). Combined with a 504Wh battery and a Shimano Deore Shadow 10-speed rear mechanism, the whole package weighs in at under 3kg.
RockShox Paragon forks with 65mm travel front the hydro-forged aluminium frame, while Shimano hubs, 27.5-inch Alex Volar rims and Schwalbe Energizer Green Guard tyres bookend the bike.
And finally, it wouldn’t be a Triumph without an accessory list longer than Tolstoy’s War and Peace – and the Trekker GT does not disappoint. Among the options are various security devices and a Triumph branded Muc Off cleaning kit.
