The restomod market is rapidly becoming saturated with familiar icons from the history of the motorcar that have been engorged, injected with power and laced with space-age composites, sumptuous leather and precious metals. Overfinch, long-time Range Rover fettler, is bucking the trend. With its Heritage Field Edition, luxury, opulence, harnessing exactly what’s always been great about the Range Rover, is the aim of the game.
“Inspired by British country pursuits”, the Heritage Field Edition is a 1993 Range Rover LSE that’s been restored to better-than-new. It features knurled brightwork, tan leather paired with diamond-quilt accents and even a gun and drinks cabinet made of Walnut and Olive Ash. The only thing we’re perhaps not so certain about is that wheel, which seems to stylistically pre-date the classic Range Rover, looking like something swapped from an E-Type.
Somehow this is the polar opposite of a Singer DLS but still amazing. Some cars are referred to by their makers as “exceptional lifestyle vehicles” because of token rubber cladding on the bodywork or hose-down seats. This car’s shotgun drawers earn it that description, more-so we think. Depending on your lifestyle of course.
The tech on the inside is upgraded too, with Sat Nav, Sirius Radio, Bluetooth, upgraded speakers, cruise control and even wireless phone charging.
Indeed, originality be damned, the Rover V8 of old has made way for a 6.2-litre GM Performance monster with 435PS. Thankfully that's as far toward performance that this reborn Rangey goes, though it does get bigger brakes and uprated suspension to handle the shove. Nothing too excessive and on those deliciously retro five-spokes ensconced in enormous rubber doughnuts, we still expect some serious comfort and waft capability.
By and large, most restomods are geared towards performance and a great many wind up being about as pleasant on the road as you’d expect a steroidal classic car to be. This Heritage Field Edition Range Rover, for £285,000 (the same price as a McLaren 765LT), is just the opposite and for that, we are so thankful.
