This is Bugatti's £160,000 Easter egg

Now, if not for the timely holiday of this, one could be forgiven for thinking it was a stunt designed for promotion on none but the 1st of April. Alas, this monstrously expensive Bugatti egg is still being passed around as late as 6th April, so it’s safe to say this is for real.

So ahead of the Easter weekend, we thought we’d tell you about it and see what perspective Goodwood’s fans can lend. We expect you’ll take it about as seriously as we do…

Yes, this egg is a Bugatti-made collaboration with Asprey. The centuries-old luxury emporium and jeweller, which creates unique artworks, has recent form in collaborations with the French hypercar maker, with NFTs and miniature Bugatti sculptures just a couple of a number of collaborations. They’re kind of cool, given they feature the Bugatti La Voiture Noir.

These however, are just eggs, with the only tangible connection to Bugatti being the claim that Carlo Bugatti, Ettore Bugatti’s father, once said that “the purest perfect shape of nature is the egg”.

A run of 111 are due to be made, with the prices 001 to 101 ranging from £16,000 to £40,000. 102 to 111 however will be a bit more special, costing from £160,000. The Royale Edition features tiny silver dancing elephants, a reference to the mascot of the famous Type 41 Royale Bugatti.

Crack open the egg – an event in itself we must say – and within is Chateau Saint Jean, Ettore’s former residence and Bugatti’s current HQ, in miniature silver form, with a Royale parked out front. We must confirm that we don’t mean crack literally. Please don’t destroy your very expensive egg if you buy one, it has a rather balletic opening mechanism.

So what do you reckon? Cynical trinket or genuinely intriguing jewellery piece? There is something to it, though I think I’d have to have bought everything I could ever want in the world, and do everything I’ve ever wanted to do, before even considering buying one.

Also consider the following. With the Chiron out of production, a successor some way away and the Mistral not yet being made, this egg is currently the only production Bugatti. Strange times.
