The Terzo Millennio is the first ever electric Lamborghini

Meet the first electric Lambo, the Italian firm’s vision of a supercar of the future and fittingly called Terzo Millennio – that’s third millennium to us.

It is a concept that has been developed in collaboration with the famed Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and, so says Lamborghini, it “marks the first steps of a possible future Lamborghini electric super sportscar.”

Apart from enough visual drama to tick all the boxes as a poster car of the new supercar generation, the Lamborghini Terzo Millennio holds several significant clues to how Lamborghini sees a production electric car, even though this concept is far more dream machine than running prototype. 

It is not, for example, battery-powered. Power for the motor located inside each wheel would be stored in supercapacitors, which last longer than batteries. The carbon-fibre body itself has a role to play in acting as an energy storage system, while also having an element of self-healing about it. The car’s aero has been maximised to take advantage of the new electric architecture. 

The cabin is a virtual world, but there’s still room for the driver. Encouragingly Lamborghini says in terms of its typically breathtaking performance and emotional appeal, Terzo Millennio is still very much a Lambo for driving enthusiasts. 

Lamborghini is facing more hypercar competition than ever, and while this future-tech is most definitely work in progress, it is also a statement of intent from the company that gave us Miura, Countach and Aventador. A welcome development then – especially since the new machine would surely look one of the family parked up alongside its awesome forebears.
