Lexus has unveiled its new small city SUV, or “urban compact crossover”, the UX, ahead of its appearance at the Geneva motor show.

Under the punchy bodywork, there’s an all-new platform to give the UX “exceptional body rigidity” according to Lexus, and a low centre of gravity for a more performance-oriented drive that’s more akin to the handling of a hatchback.

Further details, including pricing and on-sale dates, will be released with the car’s launch to the media on Tuesday but you can expect plenty of leather and standard kit; although it’s the baby of the Lexus SUV range, it’s still from a premium family.

The UX will have its work cut out to get noticed in this market: its competitors include the highly lauded Volvo XC40, BMW X2, Audi Q2 and Jaguar E-Pace.
