The new Giulia and Stelvio Quadrifoglio are very fast and very green

We’re big fans of both the Giulia Quadrifoglio and the Stelvio Quadrifoglio, the Giulia because it’s one of the best Alfa Romeos ever made and the Stelvio because we lived with one for four months and didn’t want to give it back. While the new cars aren’t all new, they’re the cars we already really like with some detail improvements. And green paint – did we mention that already?

First of all, the powertrain. It is exactly the same, with both cars powered by a 2.9-litre, twin-turbo V6 with 510 horsepower and 610NM of torque. The Giulia is still rear-wheel-drive, the Stelvio all-wheel-drive, and both have the same eight-speed automatic gearbox. You get the various drive modes, too, which affect the steering, suspension, engine response and driver aids, including the oh-so-wonderful Race mode which turns everything off and opens up the exhaust to the volume of a naval gun. New, however, is the option of a titanium Akrapovič exhaust with carbon-fibre tips. Because what two of the loudest road cars around needed were more throaty pipes.

Alfa Romeo has said that it has upped the quality and appeal both inside and out. In the cabin you’ll find a leather-covered gearlever and steering wheel, a slightly redesigned centre console and new Alcantara and leather seats (you can still have the Sparco carbon-fibre buckets). You can even opt to have red or green seatbelts rather than the standard black.

The infotainment system has been given quite the overhaul. There’s an 8.8-inch central touchscreen with a number of new features, including a real-time powertrain temperature display and a system that measures drag times and distances.

On the outside you get new, darker rear lenses, a black, glossy finish to the badges, and, as options, Mopar-designed carbon-fibre front grille, mirror caps and rear spoiler. There are also new 21-inch wheels on the Stelvio.

Particular attention appears to have been paid to the paint schemes as well; “Alfa Romeo designers have categorised the liveries available on the 2020 Quadrifoglio models into four categories”. There’s “Competizione, recalling the brand’s sporting tradition; Metal, emphasising its dynamic spirit; Solid, dedicated to those seeking stability; and Classic, which recalls and reinterprets the heritage of Alfa Romeo.” It’s in the ‘Classic’ range that you find three new colours, namely 6C Villa d’Este Red, GT Junior Ocra and the wonderful Montreal Green. All we need to do now is drive the things. That is if we can find the time to pry ourselves away from the Giulia GTA configurator.
