The Mustang Mach-E – Ford’s first full-electric car

Risking the wrath of Ford purists the world over, Ford has named its new electric SUV the Mustang Mach-E, ahead of its unveiling in Los Angeles on Sunday. Spy shots show the big, battery-powered, five-door 4x4 is to get a backlit pony outline in its blanked off nose, but otherwise it’ll have little in common with the Blue Oval’s sports car icon.

Linking the SUV to the Mustang Mach cars might infuriate some but it does suggest that at least in the initial First Edition form to be displayed on Sunday, it will have no shortage of performance. Mach 1 was originally a high-power option package introduced for the Mustang in 1969 and used subsequently to denote the highest performing pony cars.

The Mustang Mach-E is Ford’s first all-electric car and will be up against electric newcomers like the Tesla Model X and forthcoming Model Y, the Jaguar I-Pace, Mercedes EQC and, from Audi, the e-tron and new e-tron Sportback which, like the Mustang Mach-E, will be making its public debut at the Los Angeles Motor Show on 20th November.

Ford is relying on not just its sporting heritage to give its newcomer a boost but also the British actor Idris Elbra who will be unveiling the Mach-E. All we need now is a video of Idris driving it flat out around the hilly streets of San Francisco…

Engineered and designed in the US as a global model, the Mach-E should hit the UK in 2020. Ford says pre-ordering via ford.com will open immediately after the car is unveiled.
