The fastest production car of 1928? That was the mighty Mercedes-Benz 630K, developed by Ferdinand Porsche (before he had his own company) and the supercar pin-up of its day. With its supercharged 6.3-litre engine and top speed of more than 90mph it could outrun anything. Only 150 were ever made and one of them is now coming up for sale…
Bonhams has it available at its upcoming autumn auction at the Autoworld Museum in Brussels on Sunday 6th September. In the late 1920s as today, 630Ks do not come cheap, and the presale estimate is between €600-900,000.
As the pictures show, this 630K is in fine fettle but it wasn’t always that way. It was originally a Mercedes demonstrator used in competitions like the Alpenfahrt Rally, which it won in both 1928 and 1929. But following an accident in Finland the car remained unrepaired for 60 years. It was rescued in 1989 by a German collector who embarked on its restoration. Since then it has competed in several classic rallies including the Mille Miglia re-run for which it remains an eligible – and hugely tempting – prospect.
