The iX5 is a hydrogen-powered BMW SUV
BMW is rolling hard on alternative fuels, not just pure EVs. Meet the BMW iX5 Hydrogen. It does what it says on the tin. Currently still in development, the hydrogen-powered luxury SUV will appear first in prototype form at the IAA Mobility 2021 Motor Show.
In fact, it’ll be running, alongside a number of other vehicles in the so-called ‘Blue Lane', driving visitors on the connective route between the various exhibition spaces around the city centre.
So what numbers are we working with? At present, the prototypes are pushing 170PS (125kW) of hydrogen to electric converted energy. However, with power stored in the batteries, the iX5 is capable of a maximum system output of 374PS (275kW). Though BMW claims “strong long-distance capabilities” thanks to filling times between three and four minutes, no range figure is available just yet.
The iX5 even comes with sustainably produced tyres. Yes, they’re made of natural rubber and wood-based rayon. The raw materials for these are extracted in compliance with the Forest Stewardship Council.
The iX5 is recognisable as an i family product like any other. It features bespoke bodywork including bumpers, grilles and added elements with flashes of blue, complemented by a matching livery.
Though just a tester for the moment, BMW sees big potential for hydrogen in its future alternative fuel zero-emission vehicle line-up. All this is contingent on the expansion of infrastructure and the development of renewable hydrogen production. For now, a small series of iX5s is slated for launch in 2022, for demonstration and testing purposes.
“With its high-performance fuel cell and optimised power battery, the BMW iX5 Hydrogen’s drive system is unique in the world,” said Juergen Guldner, head of BMW Group Hydrogen Fuel Cell Technology and Vehicle Projects. “Filling up the hydrogen tanks only takes three to four minutes, so there are no limits on using the BMW iX5 Hydrogen for long distances, with just a few short stops in-between.”
