The ID.5 GTX will be VW’s second hot EV

Another entry into Volkswagen’s ID. line-up of electric cars is imminent. The ID.5 GTX, all but revealed here, will be the coupe variant of the ID.4 crossover SUV. These sorts of cars have a habit of being, shall we say, aesthetically challenging but the ID.5 from what we can see, makes a half-decent go of it.

As what is effectively a coupe version of the ID.4, the ID.5 carries over that car’s minimalism, with smooth surfaces and elegant lighting. It’s certainly less fussy, less fiddly and has less fakery, than its Audi cousin, the Q4 E-Tron Sportback.

All that’s different between this and the ID.4, really, is it’s had a bit lopped off at the rear and a spoiler tacked on. Not we think, to the detriment of its looks. Even with that psychedelic Santa wrap, we actually think it looks rather sleek.

As for the technical bits? Well, the GTX has a projected WLTP range of 308 miles, which is pleasing. Then, of course, there’s the performance. With dual-motors and all-wheel-drive, it should match the ID.4 GTX’s 6.2-second 0-62mph time. With that more aerodynamic rear end, it could top the ID.4’s 112mph top speed, too. ID.5s will, unlike the ID.4, all ship with the top-spec 77kWh battery and are expected to come with a maximum charging speed of 150kW, improving on the ID.4’s existing 125kW maximum output thanks to new software.

If you’re wanting in on the ID.5 Coupe SUV, we expect deliveries to begin towards the end of this year, if not early next year.
