The Hyundai Prophecy concept doesn't have a steering wheel

All Hyundai’s spectacularly futuristic showcar needs is a motor show to display it at… even without one the Prophecy concept previews a very sensuous and sporty future for the South Korean brand.

In the great tradition of showcars, the Prophecy is a real leap into the future, with little apart from its electric drivetrain to link it to today’s Hyundai range. Design-wise it is in a class of its own, a beautiful Hyundai which, being based on last year’s 45 concept, is not an overly large car either.

The electric four-door sedan, smooth as a bar of soap, sits on a long wheelbase with its gently curving, uninterrupted form eschewing current fads for a more classic car appeal. Hyundai says it is a “an iconic silhouette of perfect proportions”.

And just wait until you see the interior. That is more spaceship than car, with an array of screens and lighting effects. Its joystick steering provides lots of interior space for relaxing in comfort while the car drives itself.

So what does it all mean, apart from the eye candy element? More electric Hyundais that’s for sure. The Hyundai group is spending big to have 44 electrified vehicles by 2025, with more than 75 per cent of its line-up electrified in one form or another by the end of this year.

Does it also mean a new high performance electric model is in the pipeline that really delivers in the showrooms what the brand’s “sporty and sensuous” philosophy promises? If it looks this good, we can only hope so.
