Christmas is just around the corner, and with it, the end of this godforsaken year. And while the urge to fill your loved one’s stockings with face masks and vodka is strong, resist and instead treat them to a hefty dose of motoring cheer.
As ever, we’ve put together a comprehensive gift guide to get you through the festive season. While no scale model will make up for pub closures and toilet paper shortages, here’s hoping that these suggestions can help stave off the boredom until the New Year.
Give the gift of the Goodwood Road Racing Club Fellowship this year, and raise your loved one’s spirits for just £39. As a Goodwood Fellow, they will receive a whole year’s worth of exclusive Goodwood Road Racing Club benefits, including an online catalogue of GRRC Original short films and 25 years of Goodwood’s motorsport archive, plus access to tickets for the GRRC-only events.
Make up for the lack of dates on this year’s calendar by buying a new one and filling it with hope and prospective events. While there are no end of epic motorsport calendars kicking around, this rally compilation courtesy of McKlein has to be one of our favourites. Filled with high-definition, wide-angled shots, it’s the ultimate celebration of all things rally. Pick it up for less than 40 euros here.
While many artists frequent the classic racing circuit, none set the scene quite like Tim Layzell, whose beautiful pop art-inspired pieces are instantly recognisable and wonderfully unique.
Treat the petrolhead in your life to one of these block colour and solid line prints, with prices starting from £125 for a Pebble Beach Retro Auto poster and rising to around £250 for a wonderfully realistic car and backdrop. Our personal favourite has to be ‘Summer at Goodwood’, although you can also remember the legend that was Sir Stirling Moss with the beautiful ‘Moss the Magnificent’. Layzell also creates intricate original paintings, with prices starting from £2,000. But you’ll have to be quick, for these sell almost immediately!
Goodwood withdrawal symptoms are real. And while nothing can quite match strolling through the pits and inhaling a healthy dose of Castrol R, the Goodwood shop offers plenty of memorabilia for when the reality is just out of reach. From the little jerry can hip flask (£10), to a set of overalls (£99), the quaint little shop features something for everyone. Our personal favourite is this lovely pair of Goodwood cartoon socks (£15).
It wouldn’t be Christmas without hundreds of pieces of Lego scattered across the living room floor, just waiting to be trodden on. But this year, you can avoid the pain by offering your loved one a pre-order of the new Lego Technic McLaren Senna GTR, which will be available from the 1st of January.
Comprising 830-pieces and aimed at ages 10 and above, the new model features a V8 engine with moving pistons, opening dihedral doors and a one-of-a-kind blue livery. At 32cm (12 inches) long, it’s the first McLaren supercar to be recreated in LEGO Technic form and promises to be incredibly authentic. Even better, it will cost just a fraction of the real deal, at £44.99.
Money may not buy happiness, but it will certainly afford a decent dose of adrenalin, something which has been in painfully short supply throughout 2020. Treat your Mum/Dad/Uncle-twice-removed to any one of Goodwood’s excellent driving experiences this Christmas, from the £220 Land Rover off-road experience to the £349 Performance Track drive.
Alternatively, if your Pa is more of a pilot, take a look at our awesome aerial adventures, which begin at £210 with a Cessna flying lesson, and include the £499 Historic Harvard flight.
Earlier this year, a perfect Christmas present formula emerged, dictating that only four types of presents ever be needed – ‘something they want, something they need, something to wear and something to read’. And this gift will certainly tick that last box, offering an in depth look into the life of Richard Seaman, the first Englishman to win a race for Mercedes-Benz and the last Grand Prix driver to die in a crash before the outbreak of the Second World War. For just £14.55, buy yourself some wonderful peace and quiet while your petrol head embroils themselves in one of the best racing books to come out this year.
In the words of John Lennon and Paul McCartney, we’ll get by with a little help from our friends… This year, Goodwood has had to rely on you – our most loyal supporters – to help us through these dark and difficult days. And while there may be light at the end of the tunnel, there’s still a long way to go before we’re in the clear. So this year, leave a legacy that will last a lifetime by gifting a GSA membership to a loved one.
Three tiers of membership are available, from the £100 Level 1, which includes a GSA membership badge, ‘adopting’ a group of trees at Goodwood and a Certificate of authentication signed by The Duke of Richmond, to the £500 Level 3, which also features an individual plaque within one of the iconic period paddock shelters at the Motor Circuit, or a signed commemorative print of the Festival of Speed/Revival.
