The Five seven-figure sellers from Bonhams|Cars’ Zoute Sale

10th October 2023

The Bonhams|Cars Zoute sale saw some significant metal move for some exceptionally large sums money. Even beyond the top-selling £4.15million Ferrari 250 Tour de France, the next four were all, in Euros at least, seven-figure sales. The top five combined, including the Ferrari, amounted to almost €10million. So let’s count down the seven-figure club at the 2023 Bonhams|Cars Zoute sale.

5. 1995 Porsche 911 GT2

Sold for €1,035,000 inc premium (£894,162)

We begin with this late-model Porsche 911 GT2 993, which of course we know came later in the model’s life given it was originally known simply as the 911 GT. This is a well-equipped example that’s covered fewer than 10,000 miles in its life. It’s got a decent service history and proof of zero accident history, so we hope the new owner gets some good use out of it.

4. 1994 Bugatti EB110

Sold for €1,150,000 inc premium (£993,450)

Another healthy seller (with the hammer dropping at the top of its estimate) of a similar vintage to the above Porsche 911 is this lovely 1994 Bugatti EB110 in what has to be an extremely rare Indian Red specification. Given that fewer than 140 EB110s exist in total and less than 100 GTs, it’s got to be one of only a few, if not unique. Unlike the Porsche, this Bugatti has led a life of shelter and stagnation. The first 4,400 miles of its life were covered in its first few years, however the red Bug went into a museum in 2005 and hasn’t really moved since. We sorely hope the new owner does decommission it and drive it, because the world deserves to see it.

3. 1929 Bugatti Type 37

Sold for €1,150,000 inc premium (£993,450)

It was somewhat the Bugatti show at the Zoute sale, save of course for the show-stopping Ferrari. This Bugatti Type 37 from 1929 is next on the list of seven-figure sellers, first distributed by no less than the man who founded the 24 Hours of Le Mans. Considered one of the finest surviving examples of this model, with a very well-documented history, this car is well-known among Bugatti circles. We hope whoever got their hands on it uses it wherever possible, at the Mille Miglia and beyond. A fun tidbit? It sold at the same figure as the EB110, cent for cent. Outstanding.

2. 2014 Porsche 918 Spyder

Sold for €1,207,500 inc premium (£1,040,900)

We love a Porsche 918 Spyder here at Goodwood. Classically beautiful and unmistakable Porsche looks, technology and performance that’s right up there still today, and race pedigree with that RS Spyder engine. A proper thing. This example is just the fourth of the 918 examples produced, delivered first to Switzerland. It has only done 250 miles since new, however, meaning it might be a bit creaky and need a going over before use. We hope it gets what it needs and is driven properly.

1. 1959 Ferrari 250 TdF

Sold for €4,830,000 inc premium (£4,172,492)

It’s nothing short of the star of the Bonhams Zoute sale show. This 250 GT Berlinetta ‘Tour de France’, in its distinctive ‘Oro Chiarro’ (light gold), is the unsurprising top-seller of the sale, clearing £4.1million. It’s a stunning example, in a colour that was previously lost to repaints throughout its life, even though it, too, was a repaint (in the car’s very early life).

The 77th and therefore the last long-wheelbase TdF built by Scaglietti, this Classiche-certified beauty is a well-regarded example of the breed we’re certain the new owner will be delighted with. You’d hope so, for upwards of £4million…

Honourable mentions

Yes, these are the top five cars to crack seven figures. But here are some beauties that didn’t quite manage such a lofty figure. The 2006 Bugatti Veyron made a sturdy €920,000, with fellow 2000s hypercars in the 2005 Porsche Carrera GT and 2011 McLaren-Mercedes SLR 722 S Roadster trailing at €908,500 and €897,000. The latter is a properly good sum for an SLR, which has been the last of the cars from its era to take a leap in value.
