Supercar-slaying Ford Mustang Mach-E GT coming in 2021

It’s a day of fast Ford SUVs that used to be coupes apparently. Say hello to the 465PS Mustang Mach-E GT, coming to Europe in 2021.

Once you get past the questions of what it should and shouldn’t be called, you might be able to appreciate this family-friendly crossover that can beat supercars from the lights. With its 465PS (342kW) power figure, scarcely-believable 830Nm (614lb ft), dual-motor powertrain and 88kWh battery the GT will hit 62mph in 3.7 seconds (with a mild rollout). Top speed is however limited to 124mph.

In spite of that potential performance, the GT is still targeting a WLTP-certified range of 310 miles. Just don’t try for that distance after a couple of flat-out launches. The GT will join an extended-range battery model, which should be good for 335 miles once it’s certified, and 0-62mph in 5.1 seconds. Of course, without the need for ultra-high performance, a two-wheel-drive 373-mile (est.) variant is also on offer.

Power is nothing without control, though. To that end, the Mach-E GT features MagneRide adaptive suspension to deliver cornering performance. The cabin is per the original Mach-E – that’s to say dominated by the incredible 15.5-inch full HD touch display with the next-gen SYNC Ford user interface. Ford Performance seats come with the GT, to help hold you in place when deploying that prodigious performance.

Without a growling engine, what denotes the GT as a GT from the outside? More aggressive body styling, 20-inch wheels and red-painted callipers should be suggestive enough of the power within. Mach-E GTs can be had in a number of striking colours, too, including Grabber Blue and Cyber Orange. No word yet if you can borrow the Puma ST’s exclusive ‘Mean Green’ but asking can’t hurt.

Sensibly, Ford has seen fit to highlight the growth of the Ionity consortium charging network alongside the news of the new GT. Long before the GT’s end-of-2021 arrival estimate, Ionity fast-charging stations will number well in excess of 400. That’s not a huge number but consider also that Mach-E and GT buyers will also have free access to the FordPass charging network of stations – that’s 155,000-strong across Europe – for a full five years. The catch? Order in 2020 or 2021.

Ford claims a Mach-E long-range RWD will be able to add 73 miles of driving range in ten minutes when plugged into one of those Ionity 150kW fast chargers. That is, if you can find one. One thing’s for sure, if the future is electric, it’s also very fast. Just let us have a Ford Mk IV as well as a Mach-E.
