Striking BMW Concept 4 previews upcoming 4 Series

“The kidney grille has always been a signature feature of BMW cars,” says BMW design head Domagoj Dukec. “The BMW Concept 4 presents a confident and classy take on this iconic feature.” Look closer and you will see that the grille is made up of a whole load of tiny number 4s joined together.

This concept is about far more than just its classically-inspired front end, however. There are some super details elsewhere – we love the highly technical look in the lights and the mirrors – and overall this two-door offers a muscular and dynamic take on the 4 Series, previewing a production version that is both more emotional and engaging.

In profile it hunkers down on its 21-inch wheels with their polished spokes and dished design. At the rear, there’s a prominent diffuser and horizontal emphasis to visually broaden and lower the body. The LED rear lights consist of a single fibre-optic element, which BMW says lends the familiar L shape a “heartbeat” graphic.  

It is reported the second-generation 4 Series picking up on this concept’s themes will launch towards the end of 2020, and will include an electric i4 for the first time.
