Porsche has finally unveiled the docked-tail version of its seminal GT3 super sportscar. Meet the 992-generation 911 GT3 Touring.

We know the formula well, and it’s all about that engine: a screaming 4.0-litre flat-six engine that revs to over 9,000rpm and produces 510PS (375kW).

The difference between this generation Touring and the previous, besides the all-new double-wishbone front suspension for the 992 GT3, is that you can have a choice of transmissions. Yes, PDK is now an option on your wingless GT3. For what it’s worth, the PDK bumps the 1,418kg claimed kerb weight of the manual to around 1,435kg. If you’re in California and fancy a manual, it’s hard luck. The stick-shift car is banned in The Golden State due to noise regulations.

Besides docking the tail, there’s little else changed about the Touring visually compared to the standard GT3, though there is a revised ‘lid’ for the engine upon which you’ll find GT3 Touring badging. The brightwork on the outside as standard is also a more subtle silver, though it can all be blacked out as an option. The active wing, as per the 991 Touring, is borrowed from the Carrera line. On the inside, Porsche claims a “more luxurious interior trim”, with greater use of leather as standard.

What remains to be seen is just how much the Touring has been softened up compared to its bewinged sibling. It’s been noted just how uncompromising the new GT3 is on the road compared to its predecessors. Will the Touring make a go of being a bit more palatable? Porsche claims an overall “greater emphasis on road driving in contrast to the car’s traditionally more purposeful intent”, so we’ll see.

The hard figures aren’t entirely relevant in GT3s but they’re worth a mention. It’ll get to 62mph in 3.9 seconds with the manual and 3.4 seconds with the PDK. Top speeds are a respective 199mph and 198mph – yes, the PDK is slower flat-out. The new 911 GT3 Touring is on sale now, starting from £127,820.

So how would you take your GT3? With or without a wing?
