Sometimes when you download a software update for your phone, it seems to get slower. Happily, this irritating phenomenon hasn’t made its way to the software in electric cars. Quite the opposite in fact, with Polestar announcing an over-the-air software upgrade that can make your Polestar 2 noticeably faster.

The upgrade, specifically for the long-range dual-motor model, adds an extra 67PS (50kW), for a total output of 475PS (350kW), which equates to a 15 per cent boost. Quite the jump available quite literally at the push of a button. There’s also another 20Nm (15lb ft) of torque for a total of 680Nm (503lb ft). This boost translates to a reduced 0-62mph time of 4.4 seconds and 2.2 seconds for the 50-75mph acceleration time – a drop of half a second, no less. This all feels very fitting for a name whose roots lay in racing, performance upgrades and tuning, going back to the 1990s.

The upgrade was actually previewed by an enhanced Polestar 2 prototype that featured at the 2021 Goodwood Festival of Speed presented by Mastercard. Initially available in European markets, including the UK, Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, Switzerland, Finland, Denmark, Germany and Austria. The availability is expected to expand, though where exactly to will be revealed at a later date.

“The upgrade highlights how connected technologies can transform the relationship a car company has with its customers,” said Thomas Ingenlath, Polestar CEO.

“The driving experience in Polestar 2 is something we are really proud of. It is such a fun car to drive already, but with this upgrade, we can offer even more to our customers who might be after a little extra excitement.”
