The new Volkswagen Tayron SUV has been revealed sporting hybrid power and a seven-seater option. It slots between the Tiguan and Touareg in size and Volkswagen is claiming best-in-class comfort, a high-quality feel and generous space, with five seaters having a huge 885-litre boot.

The Tayron will be offered with seven “efficient drive systems,” highlights including two eHybrid models – with either 204PS (150kW) or 272PS (200kW) with an electric range of more than 60 miles and a total range of more than 520 miles. Charging speeds of 11kW at home or 50kW using a public charger will make it easy to keep the relatively small 19.9kWh battery topped up.

The eTSI marks the entry point in the range with 150PS (110kW) and 48V mild-hybrid technology, but another petrol and two diesel options will soon join the line-up. All 4Motion four-wheel drive models have a 2,500kg towing capacity, and Trailer Assist is included with the factory-fit optional tow hitch.

At 4.8 metres long, Volkswagen says the Tayron has a “striking SUV design,” but its closed grille and simple lines make it look like an EV. It gets VW EV trademark front and rear light bars, light-up badges and LED driving lights that give it a unique look at night.

Life models kick off the range but get plenty of equipment, including nine airbags, three-zone climate control, 10-colour mood lighting, a 12.5-inch infotainment screen, “multi-functional driving experience control,” rear-door sun blinds and 18-inch alloy wheels. As expected, auto drive is standard and can (mostly) accelerate, brake, steer and change lanes automatically. A rearview camera is also included, as is a system that warns you not to open the doors in traffic.

Inside, the Tayron will be posher than a Tiguan with options like ArtVelours upholstery, open-pore woods and illuminated trim pieces.

You can add many options to the base specification, including adaptive chassis control, matrix-LED headlights and Travel Assist. A 700W Harman-Kardon stereo is another option, as is ChatGPT integration, an opening panoramic roof, leather upholstery, electric child safety locks and front seats that are electrically adjustable, heated and massaged.

Thomas Schäfer, CEO of Volkswagen Passenger Cars, said: “The new Tayron is a bona fide Volkswagen: its quality is reflected in every detail; it is comfortable and practical for everyday life, and it is available with a wide range of drive systems. With this new Volkswagen SUV, we are further expanding our range in a growing segment and closing the gap between our best-seller, the Tiguan, and our luxury SUV, the Touareg.”

Expect UK prices and specs for the new Tayron to be confirmed soon.
