MG EXE181 is a crazy electric hypercar concept

If the MG Cyberster wasn’t proof enough that the reanimated British brand is back in a big way, this should do the trick. The MG EXE181 is an all-electric hypercar concept and a homage to MG’s amazing land speed record cars of the 1950s particularly, perhaps obviously, the EX181.

Like that ‘50s speedster, this concept is a slippery, teardrop-shaped machine, albeit with plenty of 2020s style sensibilities. There’s a huge glass canopy, and bracket-shaped, slightly Ford GT-looking LED lights. The driving position is very obviously central and solitary, with no passenger slots visible within that slim canopy.

Inside, the MG’s yoke-style steering wheel reveals what MG’s written materials have yet to: this is a quad-motor machine, potentially with motor-in-wheel technology. There are no numbers or specs to go with the EXE181 just yet.

As this is a speed machine in the image of MG’s innovative EX land-speed cars, the 181 also has parachutes built in – have that, Koenigsegg, Bugatti, Hennessey and SSC.

Also used to slow the car down are Dodge Tomahawk Vision GT-style aero flaps on the rear haunches, that deploy under braking along with the parachutes. The nose and underside of the car is very Aston Valkyrie-like, with the EXE181 funnelling air underneath the front, through and out the back via the long tail.

As for what this thing could achieve? Well, MG has given a nod to the original EX181’s top speed of 254.91mph – Veyron speeds in the 1950s is still mighty impressive – so expect this thing to potentially be good for the triple-tonne.

The car’s due for a full reveal at this week’s Beijing Motor Show and we have a strong suspicion the car will be around on a certain West Sussex Estate in July, for the MG marque’s centenary celebrations. In the meantime, just drink in the imagery of this gorgeous speed machine. What a thing.
