MG Cyberster is a 546PS SV successor

Say hello to a new MG sports car. This is the Cyberster, and it’s perhaps the worst kept secret in the automotive world. MG has made noise about doing a new roadster like it for some time now. In fact, it barely shied away from teasing that the concept revealed in 2021 would bear fruit as a production car in the coming years, while several high-profile leaks of the car mean that the cat has been out of the bag for some time.

This is the real deal though – these are the first official pictures of what is, the first sports car to wear an MG badge since limited production of the TF ended in 2011. But unlike any MG sports car before it, the Cyberster is fully-electric.

That means it’s a rare beast in modern automotive terms. Fully-electric convertible cars are few and far between, while electric sports cars are also an area as yet unexplored while mainstream manufacturers look to make money on electric SUVs and family cars first. Chinese-owned MG has been quite good at that in recent years, with the impressive MG 4 and ZS EV, so perhaps the Cyberster is a richly deserved reward.

It’s a two-seat roadster with a folding fabric roof and butterfly-opening doors. MG says the look – penned in the UK at the firm’s London design studio – is ‘evocative’ of the brand’s roadsters of the past, combining features such as the classic long bonnet and low nose with new features such as the doors, as well as the Kammback rear end headlined by a distinctive taillight signature.

That’s the story for now though - no technical details have been revealed, though internet speculation suggests that two versions could arrive. The entry-level Cyberster will receive a 313PS (230kW) electric drivetrain while a high-performance version could pack as much as 546PS (402kW).

More will be revealed closer towards the car’s anticipated launch in the UK next summer. This, or that Tesla Roadster you promised yourself five years ago?
