Koenigsegg CCXR stars at the Bonhams|Cars Bond Street sale

As supercar stories go, Koenigsegg’s is a good one. Established by the visionary Christian von Koenigsegg in the 1990s, it had grown in stature after the turn of the millennium to famously set the lap record on the Top Gear circuit in 2006 – after the ‘Top Gear wing’ had been fitted to enhance its high-speed stability. And this example on sale at the Bonhams|Cars Bond Street sale has a captivating story of its own…

Originally built in 2006, its first owner was Bard Eker who at the time was the biggest shareholder in Koenigsegg Automotive. When the car was first seen, it wasn’t wearing CCX badging so it’s believed to have been used as a CCR/CCX prototype. Lending credibility to that theory is the fact that it features air vents behind the front wheels that are unlike those of any other Koenigsegg.

Further bolstering the car’s status within the Koenigsegg story is that it was believed to be used for testing and certification purposes. Among the testing criteria is a minimum mileage the car must have covered, so it’s likely that the odometer was advanced and the 18,698km it shows is more far more than the car has really covered.

More likely is that from 2007 onwards, chassis 7031 went into storage at the factory for six years ahead of its next public appearance at a Nürburgring event in 2012. Being a conspicuous car, further documented public appearances include a 2013 sighting in Norway where the car was carrying a ski box.

Its work as a Koenigsegg development car wasn’t over yet. In 2014, it was upgraded to CCXR specification. It has also been updated with more recent lights and wheels to keep its appearance contemporary. Interestingly, the seats are upholstered with different colour trim which further reflects its mix and match evolution.
