Kia is teasing its first dedicated electric vehicle, to be called the EV6, ahead of a full in the coming weeks.

While the whole car is yet to go fully on show, the significance of something as little as a name can’t be overstated. That’s because this is the first of many specifically electric vehicles from Kia, with their own naming structure and their own style. Sound familiar, Volkswagen? Yes, there will be larger models to come, with numbers higher than 6 and potentially smaller cars denoted with lower numbers.

“EV6 is the embodiment of both our brand purpose, ‘Movement that inspires’, and our new design philosophy,” said Karim Habib, Senior Vice President and Head of Kia Global Design Centre.

“It has been designed to inspire every journey by offering an instinctive and natural experience that improves the daily lives of our customers and provide user ownership that is simple, intuitive and integrated. Our aim is to design the physical experience of our brand and to create bold, original and inventive electric vehicles.”

The EV6 will not be the first car that the Hyundai/Kia partnership has revealed that runs on the new dedicated E-GMP platform. Hyundai just a few weeks ago showed off its new stylish Ioniq 5 electric hatch. Based on what we’ve seen so far, Kia’s EV line-up should trade on the same minimalist stylishness as Hyundai’s to-come Ioniq range. The EV6 sports crisp LED lighting and sharp lines to catch the light. We suspect the EV6 will be the Ioniq 5’s equivalent. That’s to say, something between a hatch and a crossover in stance but all hatch in its style.

Nevermind EV versions or individual models, the electric car market is hotting up with entire families and sub-brands of electric cars. Can the Ioniq or EV family beat out VW’s ID? We’ll soon see.
