Honda Jazz goes hybrid for 2020

We have already fallen for the Honda e – that’s the smiley battery-electric hatchback on sale soon – now meet son of e in the form of the first electrified Jazz. It’s been unveiled today at the Tokyo Motor Show and will be in showrooms from mid 2020 as the only Jazz you can buy.

Unlike the Honda e, the new Jazz is a hybrid with both a petrol engine and an electric motor. It’s unlikely to have any electric-only running ability and nor do you have to plug it in. Technical details are sketchy, but it’s believed to follow the mechanical layout of the popular hybrid CR-V. It is called the Jazz e-HEV (hybrid electric vehicle) and comes under Honda’s new e-Technology umbrella that will see all the firm’s European models available with an electrified drivetrain by 2022.

Refined performance, efficiency and ease of use are likely priorities, reflecting what is in the UK a loyal if conservative following for the Jazz. Virtues that have made the tall but short five-door hatch such a hit here are all improved in this all-new version, says Honda.

So expect the Jazz e-HEV to be just as spacious and practical inside as before, with its clever fold-flat or flip up “magic” seats. Honda says comfort has been significantly improved with wider new seats. Other features include new infotainment with in-car connectivity and a WiFi hotspot, a new smartphone-mimicking LCD touchscreen and built-in Android Auto and Apple CarPlay.

The new model will also come with what Honda says is the most comprehensive suite of safety features and driver aids in its class. A new camera will now even detect hidden verges at the side of the road!

While the one-box look is familiar, the crisper lines and stronger shoulders give it a more planted look. Another improvement is an A-pillar half the width of the old model for a less restricted view out.

And if you want a Jazz more in-tune with an outdoorsy lifestyle? That would be the Jazz Crosstar, also hybrid powered but high-riding with a different front grille design and roof bars to hint at a more adventurous lifestyle than trips to the local garden centre. It even comes with water-resistant upholstery. A Jazz for ski and surfer dudes perhaps?
