Hennessey Mammoth Overland is a camper with Bugatti power

The traditional British vision of camping is a wet weekend in a field under leaky canvas. In the US they do things rather differently, taking on the wilds with all mod cons – including most importantly a vehicle that doesn’t just storm across any terrain you care to mention but which also delivers a cosy night in after an exhausting day of dune bashing or rock crawling. 

Suddenly “overlanding” – high-performance off-road exploring – seems to be everywhere, with just this week new models like the latest Ford Ranger Raptor, Porsche 911 Dakar and Lamborghini Huracan Sterrato getting in on the act. 

The daddy of these 4x4 desert stormers though is a giant Ram TRX pickup from the US which in Mammoth 1000 form from Texan master engine tuners Hennessey is already the world’s most powerful pickup. Along with that 1,012PS (744kW) you get a beefy 969lb ft (1,300Nm) of torque from the fiery V8 under the appropriately mammoth bonnet. 

Now you can get all that in an Overland Edition, Hennessey’s latest concoction for a (very fast) 4x4 mobile home from home that the firm says will take “adventure-oriented owners further into the wild than ever before.”

Truck-based living in the backwoods has as its centrepiece a hard-shell roof tent mounted on a modular rack across the TRX’s load bed. There’s a ladder to get into it. The $20,000 (about £16,800) Overland package also includes a retractable awning, auxiliary fuel tanks, a pressurized water reservoir and LED lighting.
