GRR Garage: We're getting a Ford Fiesta ST!

Access to Ford’s microsite for the Fiesta ST is currently blocked on Goodwood’s computers – I can’t tell you why, something about spam – which makes life a teeny bit difficult in writing this intro piece for our new GRR long-termer.

Why? If I’ve not made it blindingly obvious we’re about to take delivery of a Ford Fiesta ST, which will be our little workhorse for the next three or so months. When we do one of these new beginning updates it’s always helpful to see what the customer sees when they buy said car, but the web filtering system we currently use is very much against that idea.

Fortunately, we know what we’re getting. So let me introduce ‘our’ Fiesta: it’s in ST-2 spec, which means it has some quite stonking 17-inch black alloys, climate control, some excellent, figure-hugging Recaro seats (heated), night-sensing lights, heated door mirrors, lane keep assist, rear privacy glass, keyless entry and start, cruise control and Ford’s latest eight-inch touchscreen with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay.

But you’re far more interested in the way it drives, aren’t you? Well, so are we. Our Fiesta will come with Ford’s daft-ly capable 1.5-litre turbocharged three-cylinder unit. A motor which under no circumstances should have any right to produce 200PS… it’s only got three cylinders for goodness sake. But, produce 200PS it does and that means 0-60mph in just 6.3 seconds while returning around 47mpg. Which is all-together a bit bonkers. That is harnessed through a six-speed manual box (no sign of a Clio-style move to paddle shift here) and can all be accessed from just £20,700.

Since our car comes with the Navigation pack you’ll expect to pay from £21,700 instead, but since we do spend a reasonable amount of time going places, it’s probably worth it, and still comes in a less than most of its rivals. That’s about all we have to say on it for now. Next week we’ll let you know what it’s like.
