Five-door Suzuki Jimny is another cool thing we can't have

More forbidden fruit cometh at the Tokyo Auto Salon, with the reveal of the Suzuki Jimny five-door. This miniaturised caricature  of a 110 Defender will not be gracing our shores, given its engine isn’t emissions-compliant. In fact, it’ll only be going to India, Africa and Latin America. Let’s lust after it anyway.

Powering it will be the familiar 1.5-litre petrol paired with a five-speed manual gearbox (or four-speed automatic). The wheelbase is boosted by 340mm, while the overall length (for the Indian model at least) will be 3,985mm. Aside from that, it’s as tall, as wide and as adorably boxy as we all lovingly remember.

There’s no talk of the five-door getting some kind of commercial conversion to sneak it over here, as the three-door did when it was taken off sale in 2020. Boo and hiss. Alongside the Jimny five-door debuts the Fronx SUV too, though we’re less interested in that.

What Suzuki UK want everyone to focus on, is the EVX Concept, which previews a svelte all-electric crossover for introduction into Suzuki’s line-up in the coming years. There’s a rugged yet sporty new design language to be seen here, with v-shaped lighting, a bluff nose and butch wheelarches.

As for size, think something in between the Toyota Yaris Cross and BZ4X, a bit bigger than the Grand Vitara, or about the length of the Range Rover Evoque. The production version is due for market introduction ‘by 2025’. It still won’t fill the five-door Jimny-shaped hole in our hearts, though…
