What is arguably not even in the top three most famous Fast & Furious franchise cars, but also one of the franchise’s most tasteful, has sold for an incredible figure during a special Bonhams sale. It’s the R34 Nissan Skyline GT-R, resplendent in Bayside Blue, fettled by Kaizo Industries, that featured in the fourth entry in the franchise. Fast & Furious from 2009 – which is arguably the best compromise of cars and action in all the F&F films – featured Paul Walker’s Brian O’Connor restoring and racing the car undercover. Now, fourteen years on, the purposeful-looking machine has sold for over £1million.
The final price was $1.357million including premium – quite the payday for the previous owner, for a car that once sold new for less than a tenth of that. Of course, this is no ordinary Skyline. As above, this GT-R example – an already formidable and beloved performance car – has been enhanced, as they often are, with a number of upgrades, by Kaizo Industries, that meet Paul Walker’s exact desired specification.
Prominent upgrades included Nismo visuals, upgraded brakes and exhaust, an intercooler, turbo and custom mapping, for some 550PS. It rides on Volk RE30 wheels and features a Momo steering wheel and a Sony Head Unit and custom displays, which are seen showing the street map during a race in the film. Keeping the driver/street racer firmly in place are OMP bucket seats and five-point harnesses.
The only ‘actual’ GT-R used in production of the film, the car was brought over to the US by Kaizo Industries sans-engine and registered as a kit car, strictly speaking a 2007 ‘Kaizo’. As a result, the car was seized shortly after filming wrapped, meaning it’s no longer road legal in the US, although the 25-year mark comes up in 2027 and before that, there’s the possibility of the car receiving ‘Show and Display’ status, for rare and significant cars, allowing limited road use.
As of recently, the car has been an exhibit in Munich Motorworld, so given its history and status, we’ll be interested to see where it goes next. The new owner clearly wanted it enough to pay out seven figures. Regardless, it’s said the car will need work before being used properly, given it’s been static for some time.
