Elon Musk has given an update on what we can expect from the long-anticipated Tesla Roadster and crucially, when we can expect to see the production version appear and deliveries to begin. Come on, guys. It’s only been seven years…

Musk confirmed in a series of Tweets/Xs that production design would be completed this year with a reveal expected soon and shipping to begin in 2025. He also divulged a few details as to what to expect from a car that’s set to be a radical step on from what was first previewed and promised.

Perhaps most indicative of Musk’s lofty ambitions for what has been described by some as a Tesla hypercar, is the fact he calls it a “Tesla/SpaceX collab”. Yes, the very same SpaceX that primarily busies itself sending satellites into space and furthering Musk’s goal of making humanity and interplanetary species.

“There will never be another car like this, if you could even call it a car,” Musk said in his Tweet thread.

“I think it has a shot at being the most mind-blowing product demo of all time.”

“0-60mph < 1 sec and that is the least interesting part.”

When asked “Can it fly a little?” by Tesla Owners Silicon Valley, Musk responded with the eyes emoji, which definitely isn’t a ‘no’.

As a reminder, the story of the next-gen Tesla Roadster has evolved quite a bit in the seven years since the first prototype was previewed. Even then it was targeted as being the most accelerative and high-performing car on the planet, targeting sub 2-second to 60mph acceleration, crack a quarter mile in under nine seconds and have a top speed in excess of 250mph.

The car was to have a 200kWh battery pack and have a range of over 600 miles.

Of course, that was almost seven years ago and while technology has moved on in that time, Musk and Tesla’s ambitions have moved even further. At one point he did say it would fly. Odds on whether that happens or not..?
