BMW Z4 M40i is now available as a manual

As the 340PS (250kW) six-cylinder M40i already accounts for 30 per cent of Z4 sales globally, adding a manual gearbox should broaden its appeal. According to BMW, it’s been developed exclusively for the Z4, although the mechanically identical Toyota Supra is already available as a manual.

Even without an automatic, the M40i storms from 0-62mph in 4.6 seconds – just a tenth slower than the auto – and on to a 155mph limited top speed.

The chassis has also been updated, with the Handschalter Pack adding new springs and uprated anti-roll bar units. Meanwhile, the electronically controlled dampers, variable-rate steering, stability control and electronically controlled limited-slip differential get updated software.

The Handschalter Pack also brings visual enhancements. Pack-equipped Z4s get staggered wheels – 19-inch rims at the front, 20s at the rear – M High-gloss Shadowline trim and badging, high-gloss black mirrors and red brake calipers. We’d also strongly encourage you to go for the model’s unique Frozen Deep Green paint.

Changes aren’t limited to the outside; inside, the Handschalter Pack adds Vernasca leather trim in Cognac with black M piping and, of course, an M Sport gear shifter.

Priced from £60,675 with first deliveries in the spring, the enthusiasts’ Z4 looks like reasonable value next to the £57,295 you’ll pay for a standard M40i.
