BMW hints at M5 Touring in Christmas tease

A new BMW M5 Touring – the first one since the V10-powered E61 – has been teased in a Christmas-themed video giving Bavaria a car to compete with the likes of the Audi RS6 Avant and soon-to-be-revealed, new Mercedes-AMG E63 estate.

The film shows a Germanic-looking Santa (sans bushy beard and relatively trim) scoffing Christmas cookies as he works his way through a pile of wishlists, opening an envelope with the note “The M List. Secret and Confidential” scrolled across the paper. Grabbing a cookie for the road, Santa finds the new BMW M5 Touring lurking under his Christmas tree complete with a festive-themed wrap and golden ribbon.

Despite the wrap, there’s plenty of M5 goodness on display, starting with the aggressive front grille and revised splitter, the camera stops (briefly) to take in M-specific wing mirrors, alloy wheels, big brakes and a rear diffuser hosting quad exhausts.

The film ends with the words ‘our gift to you’ splashed across the screen, followed by ‘the ultimate electrified M Power’.

That’s a clear hint that the new BMW M5 will be a plug-in hybrid capable of running for short distances on electric power alone, backed up by the same 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8 packed under the bonnet of the outgoing M5 CS. Expect the new car to get rear-wheel steering as standard to counter the extra heft of the electrified motor.

That’s about all we know so far, but expect to hear more contract details very soon.
