BMW has unveiled the top-spec version of its i7 all-electric luxury saloon. Munich’s most powerful all-electric car is now the i7 M70, with two electric motors and a combined output of over 660PS (485kW).
It takes the place of the old V12-engined M760s which used to head the 7 Series family. It’s only right then that it uses the most powerful, power-dense electric motor that BMW has yet made. The rear motor on its own produces over 489PS (360kW) at its peak, making it 25 per cent more power dense than the motor used in the next most powerful i7.
Performance numbers are as you’d expect, pretty spectacular for what is a near-three-tonne saloon. The sprint to 62mph takes just 3.7 seconds, while the top speed is pegged at 155mph, thanks to a boost in torque to 811lb-ft (1,100nm) in M Launch Control mode. Those numbers are possible when moving too, when you put it in the temporary M Sport Boost mode.
Usually with big power and performance in an EV comes a drop in range. Happily, the i7 M70 sports excellent efficiency from its electric motors, with 303-348 miles of WLTP-rated range quoted. If things get a bit tight, Max Range mode can be activated to add up to 25 percent to the range figure.
It’s claimed BMW M has tickled the dampers, steering, all-wheel-drive and electronics for a sportier driving experience befitting the badge, though clearly, the M70 is more an extremely fast-paced cruiser.
In terms of styling, those interested in the i7 M70 can rest assured that they can have their car configured in such a way that lets everyone know what it is. The M Performance package adds contour lighting for the blacked-out kidney grille, as well as M side skirts and a rear diffuser to match the big sporty wheels. BMW Individual will allow the rather snazzy two-tone look – Individual Liquid Copper and Sapphire Black in this case – available in eight configurations. BMW has stressed too that Frozen paint options are now produced sustainably using biomass.
Individual options continue in the interior, with colour and material variations aplenty. Happily, the massive BMW Theatre Screen remains with the Bowers & Wilkins sound system remains on the i7 M70, with optional in-seat exciters for the ultimate Cinema-on-wheels experience.
The BMW i7 M70 should be launched later this year. Pricing isn’t yet confirmed but you can bet it’ll be folding money more than the i7 xDrive60 M Sport Pro’s £141,000 starting price.
