BMW gives the 2 Series Gran Coupé a refresh

For its second generation, the BMW 2 Series Gran Coupé has been brought into line with its more conventional hatchback stablemate, the fastback version now sharing the same face. The German company calls it an ‘extrovert appearance’, the spotters’ guide points towards new lights, a restyled grille and alterations to the lower part of the bumper. Compared to the outgoing 2 Series, the new version is 20mm longer and 25mm higher. It also has elongated side window graphics.

In the UK, we’ll have a choice of two models. There’s the front-wheel-drive three-cylinder mild hybrid 220 M Sport with 170PS (125kW) and 280Nm (207lb ft) of torque, which translates to a 0-60mph time of 7.9 seconds and a top speed of 143mph.

A bit more up our street is the M235 xDrive whose turbocharged four-cylinder engine provides 300PS (220kW) and 399Nm (294lb ft) of torque. Driven through all four wheels, that translates to the road as a 0-62mph time of 4.9 seconds and top speed limited to 155mph. Visual clues for the range-topping model include quad exhaust tailpipes, black trim, larger front air inlets and bespoke sills.

The suspension hasn’t escaped the engineers. New anti-roll bar mounts and tweaked dampers are intended to improve turn-in and comfort while adaptive M Sport suspension comes as standard.

Inside the car, the dash is angled towards the driver and is home to two ten-inch screens. As you’d expect, the mandatory driver aids are there in force, and BMW has installed the latest version of its iDrive and Operating System 9 to keep on top of the onboard tech.

The 220 M Sport is £34,915 and the M235 xDrive is £44,435 and the order books are open now. Right-hand-drive examples will start coming out of the Leipzig factory in time for the first deliveries in March 2025, which is five years to the month after the launch of the first 2 Series Gran Coupé.
