Bentley teases ‘Ultra Performance Hybrid’ Flying Spur
The ink is barely dry on the new Continental GT press release but Bentley isn’t wasting any time. The marque has now confirmed what everyone expected: the new Ultra Performance Hybrid powertrain is coming to an upgraded version of the Flying Spur saloon.
Like in the Conti, it’ll pair a twin-turbo V8 engine with a hybrid system for 782PS (575kW) and 1,000Nm (735lb ft). What is slightly down is the all-electric range, which drops to 45 miles in the heavier, bigger Spur compared to the Conti’s 50 miles. Emissions are still remarkably low, at 40g/km.
Exactly what the performance will be remains to be seen, though we expect the heavier, larger Spur to be a bit more sluggish in terms of acceleration and top speed. For reference, the Continental GT will get to 62mph in 3.1 seconds on the way to a 208mph top speed. The Conti isn’t a featherweight either at 2,459kg, so expect the Spur to be more in the region of 2,600kg on its reveal.
We do expect that the Spur will get the same 25.0kWh battery, with the same performance and charging specs. That means all-electric mode for up to 75 percent throttle and up to 87mph. That also means two hours and 45 minutes to charge from zilch at its 11kW peak speed.
More details about the new Bentley Flying Spur will be released in due course, as will the first images of the updated model. Judging by the teaser, it doesn’t seem as if it’s moving so markedly away from the outgoing car as the Conti did, given it appears to retain the existing twin lamp look at the front, albeit with a revised lower vent area. We’ll await seeing the car in full to pass judgement.
