Audi’s promised high-performance blitz with a raft of new RS models is gathering speed, as one look in the Audi hall at this week’s Frankfurt Motor Show reveals. Among the potent newcomers is the second-gen RS7 Sportback.
This is the new flagship RS model, a premium grand touring coupe – and for the first time with five seats to match its five doors, unlike its predecessor, though you can still order it with two individual rear seats if you want.
We have already seen the RS6 Avant and the new RS7 retains the close connection with it. Which means that under the bonnet is the same twin-turbo, 4.0-litre V8, newly electrified with 48-volt electrics for a mild hybrid side. A new cylinder-on-demand system also helps give its efficiency side a boost.
There’s still no shortage of power here. As with the RS6, the V8 in the RS7 pumps out 600PS (591bhp) and 800Nm (590lb ft) of torque to the quattro all-wheel-drive. Performance is the same for both cars: 0-62mph in 3.6 seconds and a derestricted max speed of 189mph.
The second-generation has given Audi the opportunity to do more on the styling front, distancing it from the stock A7 models and endowing it with more presence than the outgoing RS7. That’s mainly down to a wider new body, as usual for an RS flared and bulging in all the right places.
Most of the body is new over the A7 Sportback, including the singleframe Audi grille with its gloss black honeycomb structure and nothing as naff a shiny chrome surround. Choose one of the matt colours to complete the stealth look. Huge front air intakes, vertical fins and a horizontal blade are new elements, while as ever the matrix LED laser lights don’t just look cool but are super-clever with it.
We’ll be seeing the new RS7 in UK showrooms from January.
