AMG GT Coupe – Mercedes' four-door supercar

Mercedes-AMG’s new performance hero has been unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show. It’s a 196mph, 630bhp beast that continues what the Mercedes CLS 63 started in the battle to keep Porsche’s Panamera honest.

What’s Sport Turismo in the Porsche canon is simply GT Coupe to AMG, despite conforming with the same four-door layout with a lift-up rear tailgate.

After the GT sportscar, the GT Coupe is the second unique-to-AMG model in the performance brand’s burgeoning range. Like its Porsche rival, it aims to offer super-sportscar performance with seats for five, plenty of hi-tech luxury and a degree of estate car versatility.

The body is all its own but if you think you recognise the proportions you’d be right: this is AMG’s take on the Mercedes CLS, which in new Mk3 guise is saloon-bodied and six-cylinder only. However, the show star’s appearance is unique enough to line it up alongside the concept (from Geneva last year) rather more than the CLS. That concept looked fab; we reckon the GT Coupe, with its assertive front end and beautifully slender lights, looks just as good.

As a concept, the curvy four-door came in EQ Power+ form with a 4.0-litre biturbo V8 and electric motor providing a heady 804bhp. It is likely we will have to wait a while yet for that one. But meanwhile there are three petrol motors available, and none of them is exactly underpowered.

Headline GT Coupe is the 63 S which gets the 4.0-litre twin turbo V8 in 630bhp trim, backed up by 664lb ft of torque – both numbers outmuscling the 542bhp non-hybrid Panamera. Top speed is 196mph and 0-62 takes 3.2 seconds.

The V8 also serves in the GT 63 (577bhp, 0-62 in 3.4 seconds) and in the ‘entry’ model, the GT 53 with Mercedes’ new 3.0-litre straight six (429bhp) with EQ electric motor providing a further 22bhp boost. This one gets from 0-62 in 4.5 seconds and hits 177 flat out. All three models are 4Matic all-wheel drive and come with Mercedes’ Speedshift MCT nine-speed automatic transmission.

The wide-screen dashboard and interior are largely as per the new CLS as is the impressive roll call of hi-tech systems and features. In the GT Coupe, it’s overlaid with all the expected AMG goodies, from steering wheel to seats and unique trims. Plus, AMG is promising more equipment packages and personalisation options than ever.

Connections to the Mercedes CLS, which pioneered the four-door coupe genre, remain deep-rooted, but the message with this car is clear. While there are AMG Line versions of the CLS, if it’s the real thing you want, it will have to be the AMG GT Coupe.
