Alfa Romeo teases possible new 6C sportscar

Stop everything! Alfa Romeo is on the verge of revealing a brand-new car, something that promises to be “a true expression of true Alfa Romeo DNA”. It all sounds rather exciting.

It's expected that this new car will be the 6C that has been suspected to be in the making for some months, and will be Alfa’s new halo sportscar. It’ll be heavily based on the Maserati MC20, with current, yet unconfirmed plans to make use of its Nettuno V6 engine –another alternative could be Alfa Romeo’s own V6 used in the Giulia Quadrifoglio.

This new 6C will be built around Dallara’s carbon-fibre chassis, with bodywork that will call back to classic racing Alfas of the ‘60s and ‘70s.

It’s also likely to follow the MC20 into EV territory. We know that an MC20 Folgore is on the way, replacing that V6 with three electric motors, and all signs point to Alfa’s new sportscar sharing that setup as an alternative to the V6 option, thus ensuring the brand remains on track for its electrification goals.

Alfa Romeo CEO Jean-Philippe Imparato made the announcement during a presentation of the new Giulia and Stelvio in China, that an all-new car will be unveiled at the Alfa Romeo Museum in Arese, Milan on 30th August 2023.

Speaking at the event in China, he called this mystery project “a dream come true, inspired by a daring team that wanted to achieve something unique”.

The proposed launch date also happens to coincide with the Italian Grand Prix at Monza, which is also a special weekend for Italian fans of motorsport, so a new, sporty Alfa Romeo is bound to receive a toasty reaction. Alfa has also noted that the timing of this announcement in China is no coincidence, as the brand continues to target 40 per cent of its sales outside of Europe.

Alfa’s last attempt to build its own sportscar fell sadly by the wayside after five years on sale. The 4C, for all of its good intentions with its carbon-fibre chassis, and ultra-lightweight philosophy, was never quite the car many fans of the brand were hoping for. Issues with the handling meant it was never hailed as a particularly great car to drive.

Will this new 6C right those wrongs and carry Alfa Romeo back into the ‘desirable’ section of the sportscar market? If its anything near as good as the MC20, this could well be the revival of the Alfa sportscar that we’ve all been waiting for.
