A new 700PS+ BMW M5 Touring is coming

BMW M has brought us probably the best news you’re going to read today: there’s a new M5 Touring on the way. Hot on the heels of the sensational M3 Touring which debuted at last year’s Goodwood Festival of Speed presented by Mastercard, BMW will for the first time be completing a two-pronged M-powered Touring line-up with the M5 Touring.

Design-wise, not a huge amount is known, though we can obviously expect the M5 and M5 Touring to be more aggressive, performance-orientated styling derivations of the all-new 5 Series BMW revealed recently. We can see four exhausts, a bit of a wing, decently plump arches and big wheels to fill them. The rest is hidden under disguise and will be until the car's 2024 reveal.

In terms of its technical specifications, the M5 Touring is set to very much assert itself as the senior family member over the M3 Touring, a car that matches the last M5 Touring for power. Vastly more sophisticated and more powerful, the M5 and M5 Touring are set to pair a version of the known 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8 with a plug-in hybrid system, for a power figure expected to come in well over 700PS (514kW). Unsurprisingly, it’s also been confirmed the M5 and M5 Touring will put that power to all four wheels.

The first prototypes are set to hit the road (and inevitably, the Nürburgring) over the next few days. While powertrain development will be relatively far along thanks to ongoing work on the system in the saloon, the M5 Touring – like the M3 Touring – is expected to have its own chassis and damping settings compared to the saloon.

To date, only three M Cars have been available in Touring form and indeed, they are sporadic across over 30 years of M history. Beginning in 1992 with the E34 M5 Touring, it wouldn’t be until 15 years later with the E61 M5 Touring that it’d find a successor. Then after the E61’s discontinuation in 2010, we went another 12 years without an M-powered wagon before the current M3 Touring was launched.
