Video: Sabine Schmitz showing a GT3 driver how it’s done at the Nürburgring
It’s coming up to three years since we lost the queen of the Nürburgring, Sabine Schmitz. Today of all days is an appropriate one to remember just what an iconic female character of car culture she was, on top of being a successful racing driver. In today’s video, we see her doing her absolute best work.
We’re on board in a Porsche 911 GT3 at the Nürburgring and for a change, it’s not her driving. She’s driving the car in front, an E39 BMW M5, otherwise known as a much slower – if still very capable – car, and she’s putting distance on the pursuing Porsche while slithering it around all over the place, four-up no less.
Commenters probably summed it up best, with one saying “certainly the fastest lap ever achieved by this bro in his Porsche. She taught even without being in the car. Legend never dies, we love you Sabine”.
Another said “And always remember: We've got a lightweight sportscar here, following a full size BMW loaded with four people. Sabine and the M5 have always been the combo to bring sportscar drivers with a helmet and gloves back to reality”.
The video was first uploaded to YouTube by GTBoard 11 years ago but has since been remastered to up the frame rate. It’s a better view than ever of Sabine putting that M5 right up on its toes, pushing the limits and unknowingly helping this 996 driver up his Nürburgring game. We all miss you Sabine. What a titan you were, what an example you set.
