Mercedes has shown off the interior of the upcoming next-generation (W214) E-Class, which is to feature the latest development of the marque’s digitised slab dashboard. Hyperscreen becomes Superscreen in the executive stalwart. New features include third-party app capability and even an optional selfie camera. Yes, a selfie camera, which in the high-power executive world, is useful for video conferences in situ, though you can indeed take pictures with it too.

Set for reveal later this year before going on sale in July, the E-Class is undergoing modernisation with the new digitised user experience. Differing from the Mercedes EQS that debuted the hyperscreen, the E-Class will have a moe conventional binnacle driver’s display, which will sit atop the dash-spanning panel in which the central infotainment display will sit, with the passenger display sat alongside. Those like the EQS, will be housed under a single sheet of glass. The passenger display will even be able to show movies, although it’ll shut off if sensors in the car detect that the driver is distracted.

Gone is the row of circular vents, with a width-spanning ‘band’ vent running along the top of the superscreen instead. Gone too are most of the buttons, with climate controls, infotainment and much more solely housed within the central screen. The closest you’ll get to dedicated controls is a small band of haptic items below the central screen, for hazards, camera, volume, whether the radio is on or off and more. Otherwise, the new E-Class is a touch-sensitive pixel-driven dream (or nightmare).

The new MBUX will also come with an adaptable AI that can learn your personal habits. This will allow it to set desired climate and heater settings automatically and even lower your window automatically for parking garage ticket booths at locations you use often. There’s updated ambient lighting that can now put on a show in sync with your music.

An entertainment package, called MBUX Entertainment Plus, will be available which will include a data package and Mercedes me connect services. So-equipped E-Classes will get the latest fastest 5G transmission tech.

Are you intrigued by the increasing digitisation of Mercedes-Benz interiors? Are the above improvements and enhancements enough to sway you away from analogue controls? We’re famously fond of our buttons and interiors that are more intuitive and less prone to cause distraction but we’re open to having our minds changed.
