The five most powerful cars on sale today

Lotus Evija – 2,000PS

Taking pride of place atop our list is the radical Lotus Evija, a 2,000PS (1,470kW) and 1,700Nm electric hypercar, and the world's most powerful production road car. Admittedly, it’s not actually in production yet, but order books for the 130 units opened at its unveil in July 2019, followed by high-speed testing in November, and with delivery planned from 2021.

With a kerb weight of 1,680kg, the Evija will reportedly be able to accelerate from 0-62mph in under 3.0 seconds, from 0-186mph in under 9.0 seconds, and top out at over 200mph.

The first Lotus road car to feature a full carbon-fibre chassis, the Evija’s four wheel-mounted electric motors are powered by a 70kWh battery pack developed in conjunction with Williams Advanced Engineering.

Rimac C_Two – 1,914PS

Unveiled at the 2018 Geneva Motor Show, the Rimac C_Two is the second brainchild of Croatian Mate Rimac, and looks set to become the second most powerful road-going car when delivery resumes post-COVID.

The futuristic hypercar is (surprise, surprise) also fully electric, and boasts a power output of 1,914PS (1,408kW) and 2,300Nm, 0-62mph acceleration in 1.85 seconds and a top speed of 258mph. Matching its incredible performance will be an impressive range of 402 miles.

Based on a completely carbon-fibre chassis, the C_Two will come dripping with innovative tech, including Level 4 autonomous driving, face recognition technology and an all-wheel-drive torque vectoring system.

Koenigsegg Jesko – 1,625PS

From Croatia to Scandanavia and another hypercar. The $3 million (£2.31million) Koenigsegg Jesko is the successor to the manufacturer’s Agera and features a development of its 5.0-litre twin-turbocharged V8 engine. The first combustion engined model to make our list, it boasts a power output of 1,625PS (1,195kW) and 1,500Nm of torque when running on E85 biofuel.

The mid-mounted engine features a new 180-degree flat-plane crankshaft, which increases the redline from 8,250rpm to 8,500rpm, while also saving 5kg of weight. Paired to Koenigsegg’s nine-speed multi-clutch Light Speed Transmission, it can in theory reach a top speed of 278mph.

Koenigsegg Regera – 1,500PS

Joining its Swedish sister on this list is Koenigsegg’s Regera, a limited production plug-in hybrid powered by the same 5.0-litre twin-turbo V8 but with three YASA electric motors.

Combined, they put out 1,500PS (1,103kW) – the highest combined peak power and torque output of any production hybrid. Through the one-speed-fixed gear, the Regera accelerates from a standstill to 62mph in 2.8 seconds, to 124 mph in 6.6 seconds, 186 mph in 10.9 seconds and 249mph (6mph below its electronically limited top speed) in 20 seconds. Last September, it even broke the 0–249–0mph acceleration and deceleration record for a production car with a time of 31.49 seconds. We didn’t know that was a thing either.

Bugatti Chiron – 1,500PS

A few years ago and this would have been our comfortable victor, but the bulbous Bugatti has fallen out of favour with the power Gods and barely scrapes into our top five. Nonetheless, it’s still a brilliant beast, with its 8.0-litre quad-turbocharged W16 (courtesy of its predecessor, the Veyron), producing 1,500PS (1,103kW) at 6,70rpm and 1,600 Nm of torque between 2,000-6,000rpm.

With that power put to all four wheels via a seven-speed double-clutch transmission, the Chiron can accelerate from 0-62mph in 2.4 seconds, reaching 124mph in 6.5 seconds and 186mph in 13.6 seconds. For safety reasons the €2.4 million Chiron’s top speed is limited to 261mph.
