Here’s the first teaser of Cupra’s new sporty crossover coupé

If you have been wondering what Cupra – SEAT’s sporty badge turned performance offshoot – was going to do next, here’s your answer: it’s an all-electric sporty crossover coupe.

This teaser shot is all we have to go on so far, ahead of the concept’s unveiling at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September. That reflection of a curvy fastback roofline looks pretty neat though, as does the now-common design cue of a full width rear light bar and – just as much of an electric-car signature – an illuminated logo.

We are promised high performance in a sleek shape with “the presence of an SUV”. Which is of course what pretty much everyone wants to offer right now. The company says the car previews the first all-electric Cupra but if it makes production, as is likely, it will be only the second standalone Cupra model after the Formentor, another sporty coupe crossover which had its debut at the Geneva Motor Show in March this year.

The Formentor is a plug-in hybrid with 30-mile zero-emissions range, while the new concept is entirely battery powered and likely to offer a step up on the Formentor’s 242bhp performance. There’s no confirmation yet of the powertrain but with the VW Group spending billions on its MEB electric vehicle architecture, Cupra won’t have to go far for all the best new bits.

As well as sporty styling expect a lot of power, advanced torque vectoring and all-wheel-drive in the production version, in line with Cupra’s mission to be not just the SEAT brand’s performance leader – Cupra is a contraction of Cup Racing – but also its technology flagship.
