Ferrari Roma – the sleek new entry-level Ferrari GT
A surprise new entry-level Ferrari GT has been revealed in the city that gives the car its name: Roma. The new front-engined coupé, previewed at a customer-only event in the Italian capital last night (13th November) caught Ferrari watchers by surprise with its classical design approach.
A likely coupe counterpart for the Portofino and additional model in the Ferrari range, the Ferrari Roma presents a friendly face and is smooth and flowing in an almost Jaguar-like way. Among Ferraris, the past model that comes to mind from a design point of view is the short-lived 1971 365GTC/4, a 2+2 based on the Daytona.
Ferrari says the new car’s style is a contemporary representation of the carefree, pleasurable way of life – “la Dolce Vita” – that characterised Rome in the 1950s and ‘60s. The car is described as 2+, prompting speculation that it will at least have the option of kiddies’ seats in the back – an important option if the Roma is take the battle to potential rivals like the front-engined Aston Martins and Mercedes-AMG GT.
As a front-engined, rear-drive, two-door coupé with GT-like luxury and everyday usability it is likely the Ferrari Roma will take its place in the range as a sub-GTC4 Lusso model that sits alongside the Portofino convertible. All that is to be confirmed, but what is known is that it uses a version of the twin-turbo 3.9-litre V8 used in the Portofino, here pumping out 620PS (612bhp). It is coupled with the eight-speed DCT gearbox from the SF90 Stradale.
The Roma is slightly smaller than the Portofino and without the retractable top weighs less at 1,472kg. Ferrari claims a 0-62mph time of 3.4 seconds and a top speed of more than 199mph.
