Who has £3.1M for this road-going McLaren P1 GTR?
We saw one for the first time at the Festival of Speed in 2015, then drooled over its steroidal sibling last week at Supercar Sunday Breakfast Club. Now the machine that really is as race-car-for-the-road as you can get is back – and it could have your name all over it…
It’s a version of the track-only McLaren P1 GTR that you can drive to the shops, what R M Sotheby’s bills as “arguably the most aggressive and exciting road-legal car available for purchase today”. The auction house estimates a sale price of between €3.2-3.6 million (about £2.7-3.1m).
The hypercar highlight of RM’s Villa Erba sale in Italy on 27 May is a GTR made road legal rather than the even more exclusive LM version launched at FOS last year, but it still boasts the full 986bhp (that's 1000hp) and has been converted by the same people behind the LM, Lanzante Motorsport.
Lanzante Motorsport is, of course, the company that ran the semi-works McLaren F1 GTR that won on its debut at La Sarthe 22 years ago. Each P1 GTR conversion, done with McLaren’s blessing, is said to cost £240,000 but then it does offer quite a step up on the regular road-spec P1…
Such as another 61bhp from the V8 and another 19bhp from the electric motor. With a lot of weight stripped out the jump in performance is “quite noticeable” says RM Sotheby’s.
The sale GTR is a one-owner car with just 360km on the odometer and only one track day (at Circuit Paul Ricard) under its belt. As menacing as cars come in its triple-black finish, the car is said to be one of 25 GTRs converted by Lanzante Motorsport to road specification. 58 P1 GTRs were built in total so the track versions still outnumber the road cars by more than two to one.
As RM says, it’s the “ultimate acquisition for the utterly uncompromising horsepower-junkie”. But really a road car? One thing that helps is retention of the P1’s front-lift system. No need to worry about those pesky speed bumps in the Aldi car park then.
Now you’ve bought the ultimate P1 why not complete the set? The Villa Erba sale, on the shores of Lake Como, offers a rare opportunity to pick up not just the McLaren but also its German and Italian nemesis: the Porsche 918 Spyder and the Ferrari LaFerrari.
With the Porsche (Arrow Blue, Weissach package, 11,000km) at a guide of €1.2-1.4m) and the Ferrari (Rosso Corsa, 200km only) at €2.75-3.2m) you’ll only need around £7 million in total to have your very own ultimate hypercar threesome!
