Video: When you turn the Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez into an oval
Time may be in short supply currently, but if you can spare an hour or so, we’d recommend you turn your eyes to the brilliant NASCAR Peak Mexico race from last year.
Mexico’s own NASCAR series was launched in 2004 in an effort to establish stock car racing in the country, and today it is almost as popular as its American counterpart. Last year’s championship comprised 12 races across the country, including this brilliant season closer at the Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez. Despite taking place on December 1st, Mexico’s favourable climate made for brilliant weather and perfect track conditions.
What’s more, organisers make use of an ‘oval’ style track, that takes in the famous stadium section but allows the cars to cut straight across areas that would normally be corners during a Formula 1 or Formula E.
Watch the competitive cars fight their way around the circuit, the drivers not afraid to get up close and personal to jostle for the lead. Over the two-hour race, the cars picked up battle scars aplenty, with one even finishing without a front bumper
Ultimately, Salvador de Alba, Jr. took the race win, enough to secure him a second place in the championship behind defending Champion Rubén García Jr., who came 6th in the season closing race.
