Video: Thunderous V8 Nascar Brands Hatch thrill ride
If you’re not familiar with EuroNascar, the concept of these monster V8s thumping their way around around our dinky little Brands Hatch circuit in its Indy layout should feel strange. But this is motorsport. Stranger things have been raced in stranger places.
So with that, and thanks to the wonders of go-anywhere camera gear, let’s jump on board a Mustang for a few laps. Our driver is Giorgio Maggi, a young Swedish racer, who got into Nascar in 2019, securing second position in the Elite 2 Euro Series in his first year.
Safe hands to wrangle what to us looks like the racing equivalent of an Orca around a pond. We see the gloves go on, our man clamber in, click the wheel on and get ready for his stint.
The truth is we’re all too cynical about these things, which in reality are set up to dig their slicks into Brands Hatch’s undulating asphalt. Of course, being a powerful rear-drive V8 monster with not a lot in the way of downforce, the occasional thrust of corrective lock is all but guaranteed. You need to be a skilled pilot and on your game, but they’re properly rapid. Far from the oval-only racers some of the us Europeans assume they are. What a thrill ride.
